I have a couple of things to add to Walpole\u2019s post <\/a>earlier this week on Sajid Javid\u2019s manoeuvres regarding the Begum case in order to burnish his Eurosceptic credentials and leadership ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, Javid is not really\nsuch a One Nation Tory as Walpole suggests. True, he has a good rags to riches\nstory. But this marks him out as a self-made man, and often such politicians\nwithin the party can be more inclined towards Thatcherite neo-liberalism. In\nfact, once per year Javid reads the full courtroom scene from Ayn Rand\u2019s\nseminal novel and libertarian tract, The\nFountainhead. <\/em>In this, the rugged individualist hero Howard Roark defends\nhis stance against, basically, socialism with excoriating pronouncements, lauding\ncapitalist businessmen as \u201ccreators\u201d and denouncing socialists \u2013 or indeed any\npoliticians who advocate high levels of state welfare and economic intervention\nfor the public good \u2013 as \u201cparasites\u201d. Here are some snippets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe\ncreator thinks; the parasite copies. The creator produces; the parasite loots.\nThe creator\u2019s concern is the conquest of nature; the parasite\u2019s concern is the\nconquest of men. The creator requires independence. He neither serves nor\nrules. He deals with men by free exchange and voluntary choice. The Parasite\nseeks power. He wants to bind all men together in common action and common\nslavery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is\nnothing short of a moral clarion call for free-market, small state classical\nliberalism. Rather like my eponymous economist and philosopher Friedrich von\nHayek, Ayn Rand was a loud voice in the dark during the 1940s, when post-war big\nstate New Dealers and Labour politicians held sway on both sides of the\nAtlantic. Javid is therefore no One Nation, \u201cRed Tory\u201d, big state kind like\nTheresa May, Ian Duncan-Smith or (to an extent) David Cameron. He is an\nauthentic Thatcherite. Irrespective of his Brexit stance, this is something\nthat may well appeal to the Conservative Party base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondly, we\nshould keep our eye on how Javid handles the current issue of knife crime. I\nhave no doubt that he is entirely sincere in his determination to do all that\nis necessary to bring this apparent crime wave under control, in the same way\nthat I have no doubt he despises all the Shamina Begum stands for. We should\nnot judge his actions purely by his political ambitions. But if he does wring\nconcessions from Theresa May (who is copping some blame for police cuts on her\nwatch as Home Secretary) and money from the Chancellor, and if he does manage\nto establish a strong working relationship with the Police (which recent\nConservative ministers seem to have squandered) then he could go some way to\nmoving the Conservatives back onto what was once very strong political ground\nfor them \u2013 law and order. The Conservative Party membership would notice that.\nAnd so would the voting public.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
