The Cranleigh Foundation was incorporated in December 2007 and registered as a charity in February 2008. Today the primary objective of Cranleigh Foundation is:
- to widen access to the School by offering ‘Foundationer’ places which support local talented and gifted children, particularly those who have lost the support of one or both parents through exceptional or tragic circumstances, and who would benefit from a nurturing boarding environment.
2. How are funds raised for the Foundation?
Significant funds have been raised by the Foundation since 2008 which have been used to good effect for the Foundationer programme and, in the past, to assist the School in funding new facilities. Today the Foundation’s focus rests solely with offering Foundationer bursaries.
The money has been raised by a variety of means: the Foundation Christmas Fair, fundraising balls, tennis tournaments, grant-making bodies, sponsorship, as well as donations and legacies by individual donors. In addition, parents contribute £80 per term per child to the Foundation – last term, two-thirds took part in this scheme.
3. What is a Foundationer place at Cranleigh?
Foundationer places are 100/110%-funded places for children who have lost the support of one or both parents through exceptional or tragic circumstances. The Foundationer bursary covers fees and related expenses.
In addition to receiving direct applications from the public, we work with nominating organisations, such as Royal National Children’s Springboard Foundation, to identify children who would benefit from such an opportunity. We also liaise with local schools to promote Foundationer places.
The identity of our Foundationers is confidential and only shared with those staff who need to know so that they can maximise the benefit of a Cranleigh education for the Foundationer, e.g. the Headmaster, the Director of Finance, the Foundationer’s Housemistress/master.
In this academic year (2021-22) there are six Foundationers. Since welcoming the first Foundationer in 2011, there have been 13 Foundationers at Cranleigh, six of whom have gone on to study at higher education institutions.
4. What are the eligibility criteria for a Foundationer place?

5. How are Foundationer places funded?
Currently the Foundationer places are funded by both the Foundation and the School. Following a review by the governing body, the School wishes to set up a dedicated fund for Foundationer places to separate their costs from the School’s day-to-day business. In addition, some Foundationer places are funded by individual charities, e.g. Royal Springboard.
6. How can my gift make a difference?
Gifts of all sizes made a difference by providing funds that can be spent right away on the most pressing needs of the area you supported. The Cranleigh Foundation relies on your gifts because the school fees do not cover the entire cost of a Foundationer’s education. You can give online here.
7. Are the gifts tax-deductible?
All donations are tax deductible and irrevocable and will support the Cranleigh Foundation.
8. Can I make a bequest to the Cranleigh Foundation in my will?
Yes. We have benefitted from many legacies in the past and we have set up the Vivian Cox Society, our society to recognise legators.
