The pastoral care is better than any other school I know and the pupils are genuinely happy, caring and outward looking
Cranleigh parent
Cranleigh gives a child-focussed setting to allow all pupils to thrive as well as having the pastoral knowledge and experience to nurture children. Staff receive regular training in caring for candidates who have suffered trauma, dislocated family backgrounds, and separation issues.
Cranleigh prides itself on providing a happy, nurturing environment, founded upon an extremely supportive pastoral system which helps children through the challenging years of adolescence. Foundationers thrive at Cranleigh because pupil well-being is at the heart of all we offer.
In such an environment, pupils can flourish into the well-rounded, self-motivated and confident individuals Cranleighans are famed for becoming, well-prepared for life after school and invariably blessed with a circle of lifelong friends
John Catts
Cranleigh has a wealth of experience in supporting children to navigate these teenage years. Our House system forms the foundation upon which our pupils’ wellbeing and sense of community is built. There is a high staff to pupil ratio, and House staff have a detailed overview of every aspect of a pupil’s school career. Tutors, teachers, matrons and prefects form ‘layers’ to catch problems and there is a team of mental health first-aiders.
In addition, we have systems in place to monitor the emotional health and wellbeing of each pupil. For example, we have developed our own online pastoral tracking module and use the AS (Affective Social) Steer programme to identify issues as they arise.
There is a regular system in place to train teachers and House staff as mental health first aiders. All Housemasters and Housemistresses have had training in supporting children with adverse childhood experiences. There are also counsellors based at the School’s medical centre who offer both in-person and online sessions.
…having been given a Foundationer place not only gives them a wealth of opportunities, it also has given them a sense of ‘worth’ and belief in themselves
